Chloe

Chloe is a female
blue mutation Pacific parrotlet (Forpus coelestis) who
hatched in April 2006.
Chloe was
rescued from a chain pet store in December 2006. She
appeared ill, sitting fluffed in her acrylic display case.
When we questioned the staff about her, we were told she was
only tired because she'd arrived the day before and lacked
sleep.
We took
her home but within a few days it was apparent that she was
seriously ill. A local vet examined her and found that
she had a cracked beak. He repaired the beak, took
cultures, and we took her home.
Three days
later we were back because she was very ill. She could
no longer stand up or feed herself. The cultures
revealed a bacterial infection and she was started on
Baytril.
She
appeared to recover and her beak healed but she remained
weak. She started getting very wobbly over the period
of another month and often fell. We took her to
another local vet who restarted her on Baytril. The
second course of Baytril did the trick and she began to gain
strength.
However,
her wobbling, shakiness, and weakness persisted for a long
time. As of this writing, she has been with us for 8
months and only in the past month has started to become
stronger and begin to act like a healthy parrotlet.
She is an
engaging and curious bird but is now terrified of us and our
hands due to the many treatments we had to give her.
However, she is beginning to relax more and more around us
and no longer runs and hides every time we walk in the room.
She enjoys
spending time outside in our screen room, from within the
safety of her cage. She has a special relationship
with Phoebe, our painted conure.
They talk to each other through her cage bars and she gets
very excited when she sees Phoebe.
